Dr. D. Vizai Bhaskar is a leading Playwright of Andhra Pradesh, India, and a significant pan-Indian writer of recent times richly contributing to the Indian drama through his works originally written in Telugu and English (by him) and translated into various Indian languages from the southernmost Malayalam to the northern most Manipuri of the peninsula. They received equal applause from all linguistic communities and all sections, testifying the oneness of Indian sensibility, besides bringing them more closely promoting the bonds of fraternity. For him theatre is not a place of entertainment but a place of enlightenment to awaken the under-privileged in the democratic state. Both as a creative writer and as a senior officer in the Government of Andhra Pradesh, he displays the same sense of responsibility and commitment and provides a commendable spirit of intellectual leadership.
The best testimony of such intellectual leadership through creative writing, is the amazing impact his play PULISWARI (Riding the Tiger), staged more than 150 times in the faction-ridden Rayalaseema region where the innocent people belonging to weaker sections are used to serve the selfish interests of the land lords to the extent of laying down their lives. After repeatedly watching this play, the widows of the dead, as the local press informed, burst into tears and demonstrated to stop others from joining the genocide and kill their brethren for others’ pomp. Such kind of instant success, no other writer has achieved in the country, says the press.
